Since 1998, Mystery Series Week has celebrated continuing characters in crime fiction: cops, private eyes, and amateur sleuths from all walks of life, from 55 BC to the 22nd Century.

For each day of Mystery Series Week we post several historic events that relate to mysteries series.

Whether you like your mysteries dark and brooding or light and cozy, high action or intellectual puzzle, there are hundreds of books to choose from. Two-thirds of all new mysteries being published feature a series detective, more than 600 new novels every year.

Readers today can choose from over 7,500 adult mysteries featuring more than 1,500 continuing characters, all from living writers, along with thousands more from classic authors.
